Belleville City Hall

Constructed in 1872-73 by architect John D. Evans (the builder was John Forin) as Belleville’s market building and town hall, this attractive structure — with its tall clock tower — has dominated the downtown landscape for over 150 years. Architect Bill White’s imaginative renovations (1987-88) preserved many original interior architectural features, while adding 929 square metres (10,000 square feet) of new space.

This 1824 stone building was once the home and bakery of Henry Corby (the bakery’s remains are still visible in the basement). The foundation and large open hearth are original. A third storey was added in about 1883 and the present brick façade in 1891. The original wood and tin ceiling is still visible on the store level.

This lockup was built in 1906 as a facility for justice administration and temporary confinement for lawbreakers under the Medonte Township and Hillsdale jurisdictions. By the 1920s, it had transformed into a hub of community activity — a refuge for transients, a meeting place, an electoral polling station, and storage. Nestled on the shores of Lake Couchiching, the Leacock Museum National Historic Site is housed in the summer cottage, boathouse and gardens of famous Canadian humorist and economist, Stephen Leacock (1869-1944). Lock 19 — Scotts Mills

Constructed between 1837-43, the Scotts Mills dam and lock allowed steamships to pass through Whitlas Rapids to Peterborough. Today, Lock 19 is the only lock remaining on the Trent-Severn Waterway to retain its original masonry. The dam was rebuilt in 1904 and again in 2023, with new public-friendly landscaping, allowing visitors to admire this feat of engineering.
