In 1965, a coalition of amateur thespians bought the fire-scorched St. Luke's Anglican Church and converted it into a community theatre. The Peterborough Theatre Guild has been entertaining audiences ever since. Tour backstage to see the set-building workshop, wardrobe and props collections, light and sound booths, and make-up demonstrations. Then enjoy 10-minute plays at 11 a.m., Noon and 1 p.m.

Built in 1867 by the Lodge of Good Templars, this site’s original use was as a Temperance Hall. Then, in 1905, it became the Town Hall. The present brick church building was constructed in 1891 but had a major renovation after a 1905 fire. The church land was part of an Indigenous village created in 1828, constructed in 1832, and then abandoned in 1836. In 1841, the Church of England was given permission to lease Chief Yellowhead's meeting house and a stone church was later built.

Constructed as a Methodist church, this church became a United church in 1925 when the United Church of Canada was formed. Major additions were made in the 1920s and again in the 1950s. This building was the office for Henry “Harry” Corby Jr. and the operations of Corby Distilleries. It has a dressed stone lower storey designed in the Italian Renaissance, with a carriageway through the centre. In 1891, Corby added stone window pediments and carved classical detail in high-Victorian fashion. Today, an innovative health and wellness centre occupies the site.

William Dixon House

William Dixon House, built in 1837 by one of Smith Township’s founding families, is an early Georgian stone dwelling — one of the oldest remaining in Peterborough. Dixon used stone from his quarry and timber from his sawmill to build this hilltop home, once wrapped in a two-storey veranda. No longer a family home, it is now a psychologist’s office.

This stone landmark across from St. Raphael’s Ruins was initially a presbytery for Father Alexander Macdonell, chaplain of the Glengarry Fencibles Light Infantry during the War of 1812, and later the first Bishop of Upper Canada. In 1924, symmetrical wings were added to each side of the presbytery in its transition to the renowned girls’ boarding school, the Iona Academy.

The family was part of the Loyalist migration after the American Revolutionary War, receiving a land grant for their service to the Crown. It is also one of only two original buildings in Iroquois that were not moved for the 1950s construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway.
