Originally called Uplands, this was the summer home of the Cummings family. In addition to the main house are various cottages, now the Carriage House Studios. In 1927, the house was purchased by John Fraser, a Toronto financier, who enhanced the gardens. In 1978, the property was acquired by the City. It has operated as an arts centre/gallery since.

Central Presbyterian Church Doors Open Hamilton

Central Presbyterian Church

The Central Presbyterian Church, designed by John Lyle and opened in 1908, replaced an earlier church that was destroyed by fire. This was his only church. The flat roof resembles more the public buildings favoured by the beaux-arts style than traditional European churches. Central Presbyterian has one of the largest and finest Casavant organs in Hamilton. Recitals to be announced.

Central Public School

The present school building opened in 1969, but the grand original was completed in 1876 with 16 classrooms. Built of local limestone on top of Catholic Hill, with a stunning roofline and impressive belfry, it made an impressive skyline for the city. The bell from the old school was preserved and mounted beside the entrance of the new school.

The Centretown Mosque was constructed in 1911 as the First United Church — the site of Canada’s first mixed-raced marriage. Since then, it was also the Ottawa Chinese-Canadian Heritage Centre. Today, it is the first mosque to serve Ottawa’s Muslim community. Chiefswood was given by Mohawk Chief George Johnson as a wedding present for his English bride Emily Howells. It was also the birthplace and childhood home of famous Mohawk poetess E. Pauline Johnson, who travelled throughout Canada celebrating her Mohawk heritage. Chiefswood offers a glimpse at the lives of the Johnson family, and life on Six Nations in the mid-1800s.

This is one of Toronto’s oldest Anglican churches. Built to serve Irish immigrants, it has a long history of helping people on the margins of society.
