This red brick building is a familiar Ottawa landmark. Note the separate entrance for the community thrift shop, while another door is the way into The Well — a day program for women. Throughout the summer, their Indigenous Engagement Coordinator offers smudging each Sunday. The bell can be heard throughout the neighbourhood. Music can also often be heard when passing by.

See if you can guess which of these windows has been carefully restored by a craftsman who also restored windows for the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa.

The congregation has its roots tracing back to the earliest settlements in Eastern Ontario, with connections to John Bethune. First worshiping in a log structure, they then moved to a larger clapboard one. This third church, built in 1889 (architect S.A. Badgley), features Romanesque Revival architecture and is known for its many beautiful stained-glass windows.

This early 20th-century Gothic revival church and downtown landmark has been transformed into a vibrant centre for arts, culture and community programming, known as the Brockville Arts Hub. Explore the sanctuary known as the "Friendly Church on King" and test out the remarkable acoustics while admiring the architectural details the building.

St. Lawrence Hall was built in 1850 as a meeting place for public gatherings, concerts and exhibitions. Restored to its original grandeur in 1967, the Hall — with its three major rooms — continues to serve as a breathtaking venue for inspired special occasions. On Sunday during Doors Open, Opera Atelier — one of the building's tenants — will present brief classical performances.

St. Lawrence Market is a premier culinary destination, celebrating the best of Toronto's rich food and community heritage. The newly redeveloped North Building is the historical home of the Saturday Farmers’ Market — a cornerstone of the Market's heritage since 1803. The North Market also hosts a diverse range of events, a new café, the Toronto Court Services and multi-level parking.

St. Luke’s Anglican Church was built on land donated by Joseph Brant’s daughter, Elizabeth Kerr and Augustus Bates. The church building has a rich history and has undergone many changes over the years. An active congregation, St. Luke's is celebrating over 190 years. Come by and visit for tours of the church and cemetery.

Founded in the mid 1980s, the church moved to its present location near West Bayfield School in 1995, consisting of a portable unit. The first phase of the building opened in April 1999. The final stage of construction will happen within the next five years, to include a nursery and Sunday school facilities as well as a banquet / meeting hall.

The Coptic Orthodox Church was founded by Mark the Evangelist in AD 43. St. Mary & St. Joseph has a distinctive history and boasts unique architectural features. Beautiful hand-painted murals, carved wood and imported Egyptian marble grace the church’s interior. Although St. Mary the Virgin, Blackburn no longer offers Sunday services, it is available for use as a venue for musical presentations, art shows, a coffee house and more. Over the years, many changes and upgrades have been made. The stained-glass window was donated following the World Wars. The adjacent cemetery, too, pays homage to generations of area settlers.

This church was built after Old St. Mary's at Pinhey's Point was deemed structurally unsafe. Many of the pews and other interior fixtures are from the former church. Old St Mary's was the first Anglican church in the Ottawa diocese and is the oldest church in the Ottawa area. Of note are the stained-glass windows and the lovely wooden interior.

St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church was built using traditional methods without nails. Crafted with interlocking timber, it reflects centuries-old Ukrainian architectural heritage. Admire its design, iconography and atmosphere, while discovering the cultural and spiritual traditions of the community. Visit Parish Hall to experience dancing, music, food and activities. All welcome to attend a Divine Liturgy 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

St. Paul's Anglican Church (a.k.a. St. Paul's Bloor Street) is the world’s largest parish church building. It is filled with stained glass and plaques commemorating congregants who served in the First World War. A 2006 renovation connected existing buildings to host concerts, meetings, conferences and programming. Explore the sanctuary, take a tour and enjoy hourly organ recitals.

Experience St. Paul’s Cathedral through its remarkable architecture and rich heritage. Walk the 8.5-metre (28-foot) labyrinth, crafted from local walnut and ash, designed for reflection and meditation. Enjoy live music and the sounds of the pipe organ, meet the director of music and explore stained-glass, embroidery and exhibits through self-guided tours or knowledgeable guides. 

St. Paul's Chapel is a Middleport landmark. Its tower is furnished with a bell that tolls to this day. The chapel itself, within a cemetery on the banks of the Grand River, offers a remarkable heritage legacy of past generations and beautiful natural vistas. Now a community centre and wedding venue, it is also home to the Middleport Heritage Society.

The congregation (established in 1852) worshipped in a frame church erected in 1851 just west of the present church. The original structure was moved to the Tugwell Farm, where it still stands. The limestone for the current church was cut and prepared by inmates of the Kingston Penitentiary. The cornerstone of the present sanctuary was laid in 1883.

Reverend James Peter Scanlon formed an Anglican congregation in the late 1950s. This congregation purchased land for a new church that was officially opened on May 1, 1959. After being partnered to various Anglican parishes, St. Peter’s became its own parish on July 1, 1979. Learn more about this church and its history during Doors Open Loyalist Township.

Built in 1955, this church is recognized as Canada’s first mid-century modern sacred structure. Constructed by Estonian refugees forced to leave Europe during the Second World War, the church maintains their social, linguistic and cultural ties. The 1972 addition and alterations were based on the original design. During Doors Open, enjoy organ concerts accompanied by a male choir.

Newly renovated in an innovative and ambitious adaptive reuse project to share space with Indwell’s Magnolia Apartments, St. Peter’s boldly holds space for faith, community, justice and the arts. Their grand architecture, upgraded Hallman pipe organ, beautiful courtyard and multi-use spaces provide an inspiring, completely modernized, accessible and climate-controlled setting. (Indwell’s Magnolia Apartments is also part of Doors Open; see both.)

In 1970, a fire consumed the church of St. Raphael’s, one of the earliest Roman Catholic churches in English-speaking Canada. Fortunately, the outer walls were spared and today its impressive scale and fine masonry work continue to attract tourists to the site. The ruins were declared a National Historic Site in 1999.

The Parish of St. Thomas was established in Belleville in 1818 when the first church was consecrated by Charles Stewart, the second Lord Bishop of Quebec. The first St. Thomas' Church was a brick structure completed in the 1820s. It is now a traditional Norman-style church, joined to a modern, glass-enveloped Parish Centre. The church is beautifully illuminated by skylights.

Established in 1874, St. Thomas's Anglican Church was one of Canada’s earliest Anglo-Catholic parishes, known for its liturgical and musical traditions. The congregation moved into the present building in 1893. Architectural highlights include the hammerbeam roof, the stunning reredos with its hand-carved statues, the octagonal First World War baptistery and the magnificent stained-glass windows by England’s Bromsgrove Guild.

St. Thomas’ Anglican Church has been a St. Catharines landmark since 1879. Designed by noted Buffalo architect, Milton Earle Beebe, this Richardson Romanesque church is notable for its magnificent turrets and elaborate stained-glass windows. The church is also known for its long-standing daycare centre and Annual Civic Carol Concert, which showcases the wonderful acoustics under its expansive domed roof.
