When Irish settlers migrated to Amherst Island, they brought a unique way of building walls called dry stacking — layering stones without the use of mortar. This tradition has continued to this day. Although you can see beautiful displays of dry-stone stacking throughout the Island, visit Topsy Farms for an opportunity to speak to an actual dry stone waller!

The Babcock Mill, a significant local landmark, was constructed in the 19th century as a grist mill and later adapted to function as a sawmill, basket making factory, and a truck body manufacturer. It played a pivotal role in the local economy. Today, under Loyalist Township’s ownership and management, it operates as a seasonal museum, showcasing its industrial heritage.

The Bath Museum offers a glimpse into the rich heritage of one of Ontario’s oldest communities. Established to preserve/share artifacts from the area’s early settlement period, the museum highlights the village’s Loyalist roots and its development over time. Now owned and managed by Loyalist Township, the museum provides visitors with an opportunity to explore local history through diverse exhibits.

Come and explore this house’s magnificent architecture. Built in 1793, Fairfield House preserves the building skills of the Loyalist settlers. It offers one of the best-preserved late-18th-century buildings in Ontario. During Doors Open, learn about the Fairfield family and early Loyalist settlers. And witness how settlement began here with just tents, basic rations and tools from the Crown.

The Fairfield-Gutzeit House is situated along the Loyalist Parkway overlooking Lake Ontario. A public park and playground are within walking distance and there are many local businesses offering unique finds and tasty treats. The house dates back to 1796 and was designated in 1992. It was built by William Fairfield Jr., whose parents’ 1793 homestead stands in nearby Fairfield Park.

Located on the oldest farmstead on Amherst Island (from c. 1790), this art gallery is a destination unlike any other. With stunning views and rustic charm, a visit here is like journeying back in time — where the tradition of fine craftsmanship in wood, metal, fibre and glass arts is presented in original ways. Enjoy this unique and immersive experience.

Come and experience the unique architecture of Layer Cake Hall. Built in 1859, it was originally commissioned by the Mechanics’ Institute. Over the years, it has passed through different owners and has served various functions. Now owned by Loyalist Township, it houses the Lennox and Addington County Library, Bath Branch. Join the library staff for a fun day!

Come and visit the Amherstview Fire Hall! The Emergency Services Department — formed in 1998 — protects 340 square kilometres (131 square miles) and 17,000 residents through four fire stations. Witness firefighters in action and explore the historical 1962 King Seagrave Pumper, which will be onsite during the event. Enjoy a rare opportunity to explore fire trucks and talk to the team.

The Pentland Cemetery — Amherst Island’s first non-denominational cemetery — was in service from 1831-2001. It runs between Front Road and Lake Ontario. The headstones record the predominantly Irish pioneer families that had settled on the Island. The first person buried in the cemetery was in 1831. St. John's was one of the first Anglican churches built in Upper Canada. It is the oldest one standing and in use in Ontario. Begun in 1793, the church was completed and used as a place of worship in 1794. Fire destroyed it in 1925 and it was rebuilt that same year, continuing to offer services to the present day.

Drop by and visit the quaint, little St. John's Anglican Church in the village of Bath and explore the craftsmanship of its traditional stained-glass windows. See if you can guess which of these windows has been carefully restored by a craftsman who also restored windows for the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa.

Reverend James Peter Scanlon formed an Anglican congregation in the late 1950s. This congregation purchased land for a new church that was officially opened on May 1, 1959. After being partnered to various Anglican parishes, St. Peter’s became its own parish on July 1, 1979. Learn more about this church and its history during Doors Open Loyalist Township.

Topsy Farms is a popular tourist destination offering hiking trails, farmyard activities, events, workshops and classes. During Doors Open, explore the farm and property with some fun activities. Hike through a 6-km (3-mile) forest trail, immerse yourself in the organic garden, skip stones at the beach, visit with farm animals and enjoy a scavenger hunt made just for kids.

Since 1867, the Wilton Cheese Factory has been a hub of cheese production. In 1921, a farmers’ co-operative took over, ramping up production to 226,800 kilograms (500,000 pounds) annually. In 1978, Arne M. Jensen purchased the factory, where they still continue the old-world curing process.
