Imagine wandering through a Victorian jail-turned-hostel, or exploring a 1920s garage that's now a bustling community theatre. With a mix of in-person and virtual tours, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Ottawa Jail Hostel

The Carleton County Jail was built in 1862 and was run as a prison for 110 years, with room for approximately 150 prisoners. In 1972, the jail was shut down due to inhumane conditions. But it was repurposed and opened a year later as this hostel. After a night in a real cell block, you can visit Ottawa’s main sites.

The Ottawa Mosque is the first and the oldest mosque in the city, and is one of the oldest in Canada. The Ottawa Mission, established in 1906, has been at this location since 1912. It comprises a small network of buildings, including the 1861 grey stone building that was designated in 1991. The red-brick structure is the main shelter building where the dormitories are located. Modern extensions have been added over the years, including a hospice, health clinic and learning centre.

Opened in 2005, the 9,290-square-metre (100,000-square-foot) Ottawa Paramedic Service Headquarters is a state-of-the-art facility that houses all paramedic operations (except for medical dispatching), a vehicle depot and administrative area for the service. This was the first LEED-certified building in Ottawa. Each day, more than 75 emergency vehicles are deployed to serve the communities of the nation’s capital.

The Ottawa Wedding Chapel was built in 1907 and served most of its life as Castor Valley Baptist church. In 2012, it was restored and opened as a venue for weddings and other gatherings. Come and visit this plaza during Doors Open Ottawa. Construction is underway to restore and modernize the Centre Block and advance construction of Canada’s new Parliament Welcome Centre. Though the Centre Block is currently closed, visitors during Doors Open can view a special exhibit featuring videos, images and information about the design plans for the building and the Parliamentary Precinct.

Explore the history of rural water, from dowsing to boring wells, in a new exhibit.

The Rideau Club occupies the penthouse of the Sun Life Financial Centre in downtown Ottawa. Having outgrown an earlier church, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian was constructed in 1872 with wood provided by Ottawa lumber baron, J.R. Booth. Of note are the splendid stained-glass windows and the high vaulted ceilings. The raised pulpit is uniquely placed along the west wall. This placement follows the Scottish Presbyterian tradition that sees the ministers as teachers, with children around them.
