Celebrate our history! Visit our cultural treasures! Plan to spend a crisp, fall day exploring the City of Oshawa.

Over 20 sites will be exploring the anniversaries of Oshawa Fire Services (150 years), the end of the First World War (100 years), women's suffrage (100 years), and the theme of equality and a fair society.

From churches to mosques, cemeteries to gardens, automobiles to fire trucks, there will be something for everyone!

Located on Lake Ontario, Oshawa is a city of gardens and trails waiting to be explored. Easily accessed by GO Transit, or via highways 401 and 407, the city's museums explore the history of the area, automobiles and military vehicles. Don’t miss our 55-room heritage mansion. Art and culture are infused throughout, starting with the art gallery, urban art park and public art installations, and ending with over 50 festivals and events annually. Doors Open Oshawa coincides with Culture Days, so in addition to our heritage sites, many art activations will also be featured.

ACE Climatic Wind Tunnel

This facility offers chambers for climatic, structural and life-cycle testing. Any weather system imaginable can be re-created here – from sweltering jungle downpours to the paralyzing cold of an arctic storm. Chambers are used to test automotive and aerospace products, to improve the performance of elite athletes or fire fighters, and to provide services to the film, television and motorsports industries.

Arts Resource Centre Doors Open Oshawa

Arts Resource Centre

This building initially served as the Oshawa Police Station and Courthouse. In 1973, the holding cells were transformed into artists’ studios, the courtroom into a theatre and the building renamed. During Doors Open, join in a scavenger hunt, activities and special performances as part of Culture Days. Also, view the Durham College window vinyls in celebration of community milestones.

Canadian Automotive Museum Doors Open Oshawa

Canadian Automotive Museum

Established in 1963 and housed in a 1920s car dealership, this museum showcases the development of the automobile, with vehicles dating from 1902 to 1988, as well as other historical items. The building also has its original freight elevator. During Doors Open Oshawa, visit the gift shop and enjoy family crafts. New this year, Lighting McQueen is in the building!

Canadian Victory Garden

Located on two hectares (six acres) of a historical farm property, the Canadian Victory Garden is an education centre. Tours will showcase an operational urban farm, solar-equipped greenhouse, beehive, pollinator gardens and earth systems for low energy as well as demonstrations of ham radio. Run by the Foundation for Building Sustainable Communities, whose mandate is to encourage self-sufficiency/ecological lifestyles.

Cowan House Doors Open Oshawa

Cowan House

Cowan House, built circa 1858, is a Georgian-style dwelling with Italianate features, including the bracketed eaves and portico elements. It was home to businessman and mayor W.F. Cowan and his family. Today, it serves as offices and meeting rooms for St. George's Memorial Church. Tours of the main floor reveal many original details of this heritage home.

Durham Regional Consolidated Courthouse

Completed in January 2010, the Durham Courthouse is a state-of-the-art facility that consolidates eight previous locations. Doors Open visitors will be able to tour the main foyer, the jury assembly room and attend a courtroom while it is in session to observe judicial proceedings. Please note that, for security reasons, visitors are required to pass through a metal detector.

Meet author Lynn Phillip Hodgson at Intrepid Park’s monument for a guided tour of Camp X, the former top-secret Second World War spy training school. Knox Presbyterian Church Doors Open Oshawa

Knox Presbyterian Church

The construction of Knox Presbyterian began in 1927 and was completed in 1934. The architect, C.C. Stenhouse, moved to Canada in 1905 and Oshawa in 1917. Stenhouse also designed the award-winning Oshawa Masonic Centre. The church congregation was formed by dissenters who opted not to join the United Church in 1925. Tours and refreshments will be offered throughout the day.

This bandshell, set in downtown Oshawa, was a gift from R.S. McLaughlin, founder of General Motors Canada, in 1942 to the City of Oshawa. During Doors Open Oshawa, performances by the Oshawa Civic Band and guided tours will showcase the unique building. Set in Memorial Park, there is also a cenotaph containing stones of allied nations.

Ontario Regiment Museum

The Ontario Regiment Museum is home to Canada’s largest collection of operational historical military vehicles. Vehicle demonstrations will take place throughout the day. Oshawa Public Libraries - McLaughlin Branch

R.S. McLaughlin officially opened the library, his gift to the city, in 1954. The architect, A.H. Eadie, studied under John M. Lyle, who designed Parkwood’s formal gardens. Lyle's influence on Eadie is seen at Union Cemetery in the McLaughlin Mausoleum, while the library uses vocabulary from Frank Lloyd Wright's prairie style.

Regent Theatre Doors Open Oshawa

Regent Theatre

The Regent Theatre’s façade, built in 1919 for Famous Players theatres, has Georgian architectural lines. One of the town’s few remaining examples of this classically inspired style, the building reopened in 2010 as a lecture theatre for the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, as well as for community and cultural events. Simcoe Street United Church

Built in the year of Confederation for a Methodist congregation, this church is a fine example of the Gothic revival style. Lancet-arched openings and a polygonal spire with pinnacles and dormers embellish the exterior. A pressed-tin ceiling, 11-metre (36-feet) high ornamental timber arches and a Casavant organ dominate the interior.

St. George's Memorial Church Doors Open Oshawa

St. George's Memorial Church

St. George's Memorial opened in 1924, the same year that Oshawa became a city. Designer Eden Smith considered this Gothic revival-style church, constructed of Credit Valley sandstone, his finest work. The buttresses and Gothic tracery are noteworthy, and the tower supports a 15-bell carillon. Come for a chiming concert at noon and an organ concert at 1:30 p.m.

Union Cemetery

Join Oshawa Museum staff for 30-minute tours of this historical cemetery and learn about the personalities who contributed to Oshawa’s and Canada’s growth. The site, which covers 11 hectares (29 acres), includes private mausoleums and a Gothic-revival chapel. The mausoleum was built in 1924 and features an ornate marble interior and hand-painted stained-glass windows.
