Leacock Museum National Historic SiteHome of the 1920s! Nestled on 9.5 acres on the shores of Lake Couchiching, the Leacock Museum National Historic Site is housed in the summer cottage, boathouse and gardens of famous Canadian humorist and economist, Stephen Leacock (1869-1944) and this family.
This location is protected by Ontario Heritage Trust.
Leacock became one of the most celebrated English-speaking humorists of his time, particularly between 1915 and 19252. He was known for his witty and satirical works, often poking fun at social norms and human behavior. Some of his most famous books include Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town (1912), which humorously depicts life in a fictional small town, and Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich (1914), a satire on the wealthy elite.
Leacock was also an accomplished academic, serving as a professor of economics and political science at McGill University from 1903 to 1936. Despite his academic career, his true passion lay in humor and storytelling, which earned him international acclaim. His legacy is honored through the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour, awarded annually to Canadian writers.
