St. John's Anglican Church was built in 1846 before Confederation, railways, electric lights or the telephone — and it has kept its doors open ever since. Burr Lodge, a historical private residence in Whitby, was built in 1855 by James Wallace, the town’s second mayor. This charming heritage property reflects mid-19th-century architecture and offers a glimpse into Whitby’s early civic history. Wallace played a significant role in the town’s development, and Burr Lodge stands as a lasting tribute to his legacy.

St. Arsenije Sremac Serbian Orthodox Church in Whitby is a designated heritage building dating to 1857-59, originally serving as St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. After over a century of Presbyterian worship, it was then purchased by the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy in 1993 and consecrated that year. Today, it continues its role as a place of faith and community heritage.

1855 Accelerator, which served as the Ontario County Land Registry office from 1873-1987, was part of a block that included a courthouse and jail. Today, it is the home for business innovation and support. The Whitby Central Public Library opened in 2005 and has become a vibrant centre for learning and a keeper of the town’s heritage. During Doors Open, go behind the scenes and explore spaces not normally open to the public. Join staff for their popular basement tour, play in the library’s Discovery Zones, investigate the Whitby Archives and more.

Trafalgar Castle was originally built for Ontario County’s notorious sheriff Nelson Gilbert Reynolds by Toronto architect Joseph Sheard. Reynolds went bankrupt in 1874 and sold the building to the Methodist Church of Canada, which turned it into the Ontario Ladies’ College. Today, it operates as a private girls’ school. The principal’s residence was converted from a carriage house in 1877.

This gallery is a creative hub in Whitby, exhibiting both emerging and established artists. Founded in 1967, the gallery found its home in the historical 1903 Whitby Junction Station. Its turrets and bays allowed telegraph operators to view incoming and outgoing trains. The gallery is inside the station’s old waiting room, where you can find the original ticket window.

Lynde House, built c. 1812, is Durham Region’s oldest home. It served as a tavern during the War of 1812 and has moved locations twice. Today, it is a museum run by the Whitby Historical Society. Next door, the Warren General Store offers local crafts, treats and historical displays — including Camp X artifacts — celebrating Whitby’s rich heritage and early settlers.

The Ontario County Courthouse was built between 1852 and 1854. By 1964, however, the building had become too small to accommodate the county’s needs and a new courthouse was built on Rossland Road. In 1967, with assistance from the Canada Centennial Project, the original courthouse was reopened as a community centre known as the Whitby Centennial Building.

Camp X once trained agents for secret missions behind enemy lines and hosted the largest wartime communications hub — linking Washington, New York and London. It has been commemorated as a National Historic Site, highlighting its vital role in Allied intelligence. This facility was crucial to Allied intelligence, making it one of Canada’s most important — and secret — Second World War landmarks.
