Central United Church

Visit one of Unionville’s most beautiful churches. Built in 1879, this early Gothic Revival structure features red brick with buff-coloured trim set on a raised foundation. A slender central tower topped with a broach spire reaches skyward. Guided tours are available.

Heintzman House

One of the area’s oldest buildings, Heintzman House began as an adobe brick cottage in the early 19th century. It was expanded in 1817 by Colonel George Crookshank and later transformed in the 1930s into its present elegant form by the grandson of the founder of the Heintzman Piano Company. Visitors can enjoy guided tours and heritage displays.

Designed to reflect late 19th-century fire halls, this building features an 18-metre (59-foot) replica hose drying tower and fits seamlessly into the historic context of Markham Village. Markham Village Train Station

The restoration of this original 1871 railway station was the first major project of the Markham Village Conservancy, with restoration completed in 2000. The exterior paint colours were reproduced from c. 1910 when the rail line was part of the Grand Trunk Railway. Today, the station serves GO Transit commuters and functions as a community centre for meetings and classes.

McKay Art Centre (Salem Eckardt House)

This distinctive example of Ontario vernacular architecture features elements of both Gothic Revival and Classical Revival styles. Originally the home of local auctioneer Salem Eckardt, it later became the residence of Group of Seven artist Frederick Varley, who maintained a studio in the basement. Today, the space showcases local artists’ work and offers studio space for art instruction.

The Coptic Church originated in Egypt in the first century AD and was introduced to Canada through immigration in the mid-20th century. A restored local landmark, Unionville’s Stiver Mill now serves as a rental space. Originally built as a grain elevator, the western portion of the structure is one of the last of its kind in the region. A feed mill was added to the east end in the 1930s.

Unionville Train Station (Community Centre)

Visit one of Canada’s oldest remaining railway stations and one of the few 19th-century stations still located in its original trackside position. Built in 1870 for the Toronto and Nipissing Railway, this unique structure features board-and-batten siding, a gable roof and six-over-six paned windows. The municipality restored the building as a community centre in 1989.
