The current building replaced the 1850s four-storey stone commercial block that was erected for Joseph Lister, which was destroyed by fire in 1923. It features a two-level, L-shaped interior shopping arcade and a distinctive Renaissance revival-inspired art deco façade, recently restored. The building is reminiscent of the palazzo style of retail buildings in the early 20th century, with an impressive street level, several stories of commercial or retail space, and a large overhanging cornice.
