Community information
Welcome to Grimsby! While we were incorporated in 1876, we only became a town in 1922. Throughout the town, you will find historical reminders of our rich heritage and early ancestors. Grimsby was the site of the first municipal meeting in Upper Canada on April 5, 1790 and the location of the Engagement at the Forty in 1813 – the pivotal naval battle and turning point in the War of 1812. We benefit from both a rich heritage and future. Grimsby is a hidden gem that is easily accessible from highways and water. Come in, stop by and see why we really are Friendly by Nature!

Biggar Lagoons Wetlands Doors Open Grimsby
From 1950-2000, the Biggar Lagoons were sewage treatment lagoons for neighbourhoods in Grimsby’s west end. After decommissioning the lagoons in 2001, the Town of Grimsby and the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club worked to lobby against intentions of draining and levelling the land. Today, each of the six bodies of water provides different habitats for the breeding and migrating of rare shorebirds.
