Explore the province’s hidden treasures during Doors Open Ontario

April 20, 2006

For immediate release

TORONTOThe fifth season of Doors Open Ontario officially begins on April 22 with the first event in Guelph. During 45 events this year, communities will open the doors to their heritage buildings and architectural showpieces – many of which are not normally open to the public. Admission is free of charge.

The 2006 Doors Open Ontario season runs from the end of April through October, with events on various weekends. Commercial buildings, courthouses, theatres, places of worship, museums, houses, gardens and natural heritage properties are some examples of sites opening this year. Many are offering special activities – from tours and demonstrations, to expositions and re-enactments.

"Doors Open Ontario turns our cities, towns and villages into living exhibitions for everyone to enjoy," said The Honourable Lincoln M. Alexander, Chairman of the Ontario Heritage Trust. "It's an opportunity for people of all ages to get to know our communities and discover their unique heritage treasures."

The free Doors Open Ontario 2006 Guide, a helpful tool for planning excursions throughout the season, is available by calling 1-800-ONTARIO (668-2746). With a variety of sites and activities to choose from, Doors Open Ontario is ideal for family day-trips or weekend getaways. For a complete list of participating community sites ...

To date, more than 1.5 million visits have been made to heritage sites during Doors Open Ontario events.
