St. John’s Anglican Church is one of the oldest remaining buildings in the historical village of Stewarttown. It is also one of the oldest churches in Halton Region – being built around 1840. Designated in 2023, this picturesque church features much local history as well as some interesting architectural features. Visit during Doors Open and discover it for yourself.

Before this church was constructed, a general store stood here. But it was destroyed by fire and the congregation bought the property and built this church. The inaugural service was held here on February 24, 1895. The pipe organ was installed in 1925. A 1970 addition made room for a minister’s office. And, in 2013, the elevator was installed.

Saint Alban the Martyr was built in 1875, but they only got electric lights in 1899 — a year after the bell tower was installed. In 1951, the parish hall was built and named after the Rev. William Luxton who died suddenly in 1952. The narthex was built in 1985 with money left to the church by the Bennett family.

The 1883 Acton Town Hall is an example of a Victorian Italianate style building. It provided a town council chamber, offices for the mayor, clerk, fire department and town constable, plus two jail cells. The 2010 Citizens Hall addition provided accessibility and a heritage display area. This gathering place, in the centre of Acton, is a splendid example of revitalization.

Hidden away in the park district of Georgetown you will find a log cabin. This little gem was built circa 1843 in Chinguacousy Township, but was moved to its current location in 1917 to serve as the clubhouse for the Georgetown Lawn Bowling Club. It is still being actively used to this day. A great example of adaptive reuse.

A brick community hall was built here in 1871, on land donated by Charles Williams, with help from the local temperance society. This community hall is run by nine trustees. The Board started annual Canada Day celebrations as a thank-you to the community. Lucy Maud Montgomery produced and directed plays here in the 1920s and 1930s.

The Brockton Heritage Committee plays a vital role in preserving the rich heritage of Brockton and area. Their archival collection — located in the former Township of Greenock's Council Chambers, currently the Greenock Works Shop — consists of historical artifacts, many of which were donated by members of the community. During Doors Open, come and learn about the area’s fascinating history.

The Bruce County Bookstore features books and authors relating to the county’s history, architecture, literature, agriculture and tourism. Explore the walls that are covered in artwork. Take a guided tour and learn more of the history of the site, and about the many readings and gatherings they have throughout the year. And maybe take home a souvenir from your visit.

The Bruce County’s Walkerton Patrol Shop ensures the safety and maintenance of roads throughout the community. The original part of the building is used for vehicle storage by night, and vehicle maintenance by day. The two-bay addition houses a welding/fabrication shop. And the office, employee amenities and storage area also house a sign shop and vehicle parts storage.

Henry Cargill built a thriving rural town of diversified pioneering industries and early amenities (electricity, telephone, fire department and library). The Cargill Museum brings to life Cargill's early history as the lumbering and entrepreneurial heart of Bruce County. Located in a former Royal Bank, it has been restored to include the original tin ceiling, bank vault and hardwood floors.

Commemorating Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee, this building has housed municipal offices, a marketplace, police station and more. With eight floor levels and a 300-seat theatre with balcony — one of a few remaining in Ontario in its original condition — the hall was purchased by the local branch of the Architectural Conservancy Ontario in 1997. Today, it is a thriving performance venue.

The Walkerton Agricultural Society is home to the annual Walkerton Little Royal Fair. The Society encourages an awareness of agriculture and promotes improvements of persons living in the agricultural community. Formed in 1854, the Society celebrates its 170th anniversary this year. Over the decades, it has seen many changes. Come and visit the site and learn about its fascinating history.

St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church — the second Presbyterian church in Fenelon Falls — was constructed in 1895. During Doors Open, visitors can explore the church sanctuary. Volunteers will be on hand to provide tours and answer questions about the building. Sunday worship will take place between 10 and 11 a.m. All are welcome to attend before the Doors Open tours begin.

St. Peter's Anglican Church and cemetery once served the busy hamlet of Bury's Green. This small country church sits in the rolling farmland north of Fenelon Falls. Now privately owned and no longer operating, it is a unique opportunity to see inside this architectural gem and learn about the local families who worshipped here.

Built in 1887 as St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, this is now home to All Nations Church and is used by the Carleton Place Town Singers for performances. Constructed of limestone in the Scottish baronial style, the fanciful towers and turrets add interest to this imposing structure. Contrasting decorative courses and window and door details are constructed of dark Beckwith limestone.

The cornerstone for this Masonic temple was laid on April 20, 1911. The upper level has been home to St. John's Lodge No. 63 since then. The lower storefronts were rented to bring in income. They were home to various businesses, including a movie theatre and a newspaper. The brick building is ornamented by marble keystones, pilasters, entablature and pediments.

Hogans’ Honey has been in operation by the same family since 1934. Current owners Ben and Nancy Hogan and their son Tim and his wife Kayleigh manage over 1,000 hives in 31 bee yards (nearly 50 million bees), generating an average of around 60 tons of honey annually! Come and watch the production process, explore the buildings and enjoy samples.

St. John's was one of the first Anglican churches built in Upper Canada. It is the oldest one standing and in use in Ontario. Begun in 1793, the church was completed and used as a place of worship in 1794. Fire destroyed it in 1925 and it was rebuilt that same year, continuing to offer services to the present day.

Located in the busy ByWard Market area, the Ottawa School of Art is a four-storey, three-bay stone building of solid appearance with a richly decorated principal façade. During Doors Open Ottawa, visitors are invited to join school staff and students in the lobby as they celebrate the school’s 145th anniversary. Throughout the day, art and artifacts will be on display.
