The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) Engineering Laboratory is located near the Ottawa/Macdonald-Cartier International Airport. The laboratory plays a pivotal role in the investigation of aviation, marine, pipeline and railway occurrences (incidents and accidents) across Canada. Its staff supports lead investigators across the country by investigating whether mechanical, electrical, material, structural or other deficiencies contributed to accidents. Lab experts analyze information from data recorders (black boxes), electronic equipment and field elements, such as photographs and site surveys, to piece together the sequence of events that led to an occurrence. While visiting the lab, you can expect to see equipment used by investigators to examine materials and electronic systems and the flight recorder analysis area, and learn about their animations/reconstructions that can be derived from flight data recorder information or railway accident site survey data.
