On behalf of the Ontario Heritage Trust – the province’s lead heritage agency – I am delighted to invite you to participate in Doors Open Ontario again this year!
Beginning in April 2012, communities throughout Ontario will once again open the doors to hundreds of fascinating heritage sites – including commercial buildings, courthouses, theatres, museums, places of worship, gardens and natural heritage sites. What makes this eagerly awaited province-wide program so attractive is the fact that many of the participating sites are normally closed to the public and admission is free.
For 10 years now, Doors Open Ontario has delivered valued experiences to the people attending events and substantial rewards to the communities that host them. It has provided a means for communities to rediscover and re-evaluate their heritage through the efforts of local volunteers. It has also been highly successful in boosting civic pride, generating awareness of local heritage, increasing tourism and stimulating local economies. In fact, since the program was launched in 2002, more than $13.5 million has been invested in host communities by out-of-town visitors.
I invite you to discover Ontario’s hidden heritage treasures and see for yourself what a truly unique province we live in. A handy printed guide will be available in the spring of 2012 with featured listings of participating sites. And this website, updated regularly, highlights many of the remarkable heritage sites you are invited to enjoy during the Doors Open Ontario 2012 season.
I know you and your family will enjoy the Doors Open Ontario experience.
