Doors Open Fergus-Elora is your unique opportunity to explore sometimes-hidden yet always-interesting places. Visit a woodworking shop, farmhouse, art studio and a net-zero home. Ring a church bell, tour downtown Fergus and learn the history of the buildings. Climb to the attic of the museum, watch our local newspaper come alive, and have a peek in some of the area’s finest heritage spaces – including one of the oldest homes in the township!

Step inside the Almost Anything Wood workshop to see one-of-a-kind works of art made from salvaged local trees. A family-owned and -operated custom cabinet shop for close to 30 years, Almost Anything Wood saves downed trees from the firewood pile and uses them to create cabinets and furniture for homes and businesses.

Craighead Doors Open Fergus-Elora

Craighead

Recently designated by Heritage Centre Wellington, Craighead was built as a limestone farmhouse in the Georgian style circa 1842 for influential Fergus pioneer Hugh Black and his family. It has two storeys at the rear and is one of the earliest surviving stone houses in Centre Wellington. Note: Only a portion of the interior will be open to the public.

Elora Centre for the Arts Doors Open Fergus-Elora

Elora Centre for the Arts

Built in 1856 as the Elora Public School, this building was thought to be the oldest elementary school still in use when it closed in 1996. The Elora Centre for the Arts opened in 2002, and includes the Minarovich & Harris Exchange Galleries. Take a guided historical walking tour, visit the Planet Youth art exhibit and enjoy the Pre-Loved Sale.

Melville United Church

This building, constructed in 1900, is the second church established by this congregation. The first church was located across the river, near where the original manse still stands on Union Street. The Sunday School Hall, designed by the Beatty Brothers, a prominent local manufacturer, was added in 1930, and the sanctuary hosts the largest stained-glass collection in Centre Wellington.

Wellington County Museum and Archives Doors Open Fergus-Elora

Wellington County Museum and Archives

Built in 1877, this National Historic Site remains the last poor house in Canada. A museum since 1975, it is now home to multiple galleries, several outdoor features and state-of-the-art archives – and tells the story of the history of Wellington County. The museum attic and Poor House Cemetery will be highlights this year for Doors Open Fergus-Elora.
